Out of the Blue was Designed by Jacqueline de Jonge.
The story behind this quilt is also nice to tell:
She lives in Delft in the Netherlands and this city is world famous for their Royal Blue Pottery. So what could give more inspiration to make a quilt than to design something in blue with white…..easy!!
So she started designing and chose the best and beautiful blue and white fabrics, started to sew and….the result was soo dull…it was clear that making the quilt with only blue and white is not the best way to go, another contrasting color was needed and therefore the red fabrics are added to this quilt and that made this quilt so unique as it is now, not really a Royal Delft quilt, but a very attractive design which has, in the end, nothing to do with Delft…
The base of "Out of the Blue" is made from 24 Lone Star points and is a combination of paper piecing and cutting. You have to make the lone star points from strips and you cut the star points in a 45° angle using a ruler. The remaining of this quilt, including the spikes and the 9 compass stars are made with the paper piecing technique.
And that is why this quilt is called “Out of the Blue”
